HISTORY

The Volks story began in 1973 with the formation of C. Ray & Co. as a union contractor. In 1979 when the company’s owner passed away, Laverne King and six other employees decided to purchase the business. As the additional six co-owners reached retirement age they began to sell to Mr. King, which positioned him as the sole owner of Volks Constructors, Inc.

In 1980, AKM, Inc. was formed, with Volks Constructors as a merit shop division. The AKM name came from “All Kings Men” and the term Volks is German for “folks” — a nod to the “people-focused” mentality around which the company was formed.

Over the past 34 years the Volks family has seen many changes in our industry and company. In the early 1990s Volks began to build a state-of-the-art fabrication facility to meet the piping and ASME vessel needs of our industry. Over the past 15 years, several additions to these facilities and machinery were made — improvements that have made Volks a major player in the fabrication market place. The construction market in the early 2000s presented great challenges, but through proper management and dedicated personnel, Volks has emerged as a stronger company, exceptionally committed to delivering the services our clients expect. .

Client expectations have provided us with an enormous opportunity to continue our growth. We are expanding our vessel fabrication capacity by 35 percent through facility additions and machinery upgrades. Meeting client demands has driven us to begin construction of a new 14,200-square-foot project support office building, which will enhance our ability to service all clients more effectively and efficiently. Company founder and owner Laverne King, is still an active member of the Volks management team, with his son, Lawson King, serving as President. Over the 34 years of being in business, Mr. King has proven that “folks” is what has made — and continues to make — Volks a successful operation.
